In his latest works, the sculptor and painter Alexander Becherer reverts to styles and means of painting of his roots in the urban art and life form. Therefor, he uses a multi-layered stencil technique based on the tradition of screen printing technology and is regarded as an important and established form of expression of urban art and advertising practice.
In the style of traditional advertisement, a few color layers are arranged precisely one above the other to create objects and compositions. The possibility of ‘speedy’ productions as well as reproductions of the motifs on the one hand points to the fast-moving of the advertising and show business as well as their techniques, but stands on the other hand in stark contrast to the extremely precise and unique details of the individual works.
Becherer’s latest work, titled ‘Not Another Pretty Face’, refers to the extremely popular and sometimes macabre public display and commercial marketing of outsiders of the society between 1850 and 1890.
The deformed, surreal portraits are made up of hundreds of everyday objects of the so- called ‘social-waste’ and, on closer inspection, form a metaphorical story.
